Joel West

In 2013, Dr. Joel West was appointed
as one of four associate
editors of Research Policy.
He previously served as an ad hoc reviewer for the
journal and as co-editor of a special issue of RP.
Since 2011, he has been Professor of Innovation & Entrepreneurship at the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences in Claremont, California. From 2002-2011, he was an associate professor and professor at San José State University, and has also lectured at UCI and other schools. Before academia, he had an extensive industry career in the software industry.

Joel’s research program focuses on how technology-based firms
combine open and proprietary strategies to create and capture
value.
He is best known for his work on
open innovation, including working as co-editor of Open
Innovation: Researching a New Paradigm (Oxford, 2006),
New
Frontiers in Open Innovation (Oxford, 2014) and the
open innovation special issue published by Research Policy (June
2014). Since January 2007, he has been author of the Open Innovation Blog.
A frequent research emphasis has been on innovation networks,
including innovation communities and ecosystems. This has also
included research on standards
and IT platforms, and on open source software. In
addition, he has a particular interest (in both research and
teaching) on high-tech entrepreneurship, and blogs on this topic.
