Since November 2003, Dr. Joel West has been a dedicated (if irregular) contributor to Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia. His contributions have mainly been related to California, its economic base (notably Silicon Valley) and educational institutions. (Time spent on Wikipedia diminished dramatically after January 2007, when he began blogging).
In August 2006, he was a speaker at the Wikimania 2006 conference in a panel entitled “What can Wikipedia learn from Open Source Software Development?” based on his earlier research on open source software.
